The Global Environmental Change and Human Security
(GECHS) Project:
GECHS is an interdisciplinary research project that strives to advance
research and policy efforts in the area of human security and environmental
change. GECHS is the result of several years of discussions, research,
and policy initiatives in the broad area of environment and security.
As a core project of the International Human Dimensions Programme
on Global Environmental Change (IHDP), GECHS arose from the nexus
of two seemingly different areas of study: the human dimensions
of environmental change and the reconceptualisation of security.
GECHS-UCI was established in 1999 at the University of California,
Irvine with support from the Center for Global Peace and Conflict
Studies (GPACS) by Dr. Richard A. Matthew. GECHS-UCI has the following
objectives: 1) to undertake original, interdisciplinary and participatory
research; 2) to collaborate with academics and policymakers in developing
countries; 3) to develop policy recommendations; and 4) to educate
the public on the ways in which environmental change interacts with
other transnational forces to affect the lives and welfare of individuals
and groups around the world, especially in developing countries.

The International Peace Research Institute (PRIO),
Oslo:
PRIO was founded in 1959 and became a fully independent institute
in 1966. It was one of the first centers of peace research in the
world, and is Norway's only peace research centre. Its foundation
and early influence were instrumental in projecting the idea of
peace research. PRIO's overall research is organised into four Strategic
Institute Programmes: Conditions of War and Peace; Foreign and Security
Policies; Ethics, Norms and Identities; and Conflict Resolution
and Peacebuilding.

Peace and Conflict Studies Program of the University
of Toronto:
This program is headed by Professor Thomas Homer-Dixon. Previously
he was the Director of the Project on Environment, Population and
Security which is a special project to explore the linkages among
environment, population, security and governance. He was also the
principal investigator for the Project on Environmental Change and
Acute Conflict, which took place from 1990 to 1993 and was organised
jointly by the Peace and Conflict Studies Program and the American
Academy of Arts and Sciences. This project found that scarcities
of renewable resources - including cropland, forests, water and
fish - are already contributing to violent conflicts in many parts
of the developing world, even though these conflicts often appear
to be caused solely by political, ethnic or ideological factors. The project
concluded that these conflicts foreshadow a surge of similar violence
in coming decades as environmental scarcities worsen in many developing
countries.
